What to do if a filling or crown falls out

tooth cleaning and filling

Fallen filling or crown? What should you do? It is more common for patients to lose a filling or a crown. It can be a permanent or a temporary filling or crown. It is more common with a temporary filling (emergency filling) or a temporary crown (emergency crown). That in itself makes sense. The name says it all: it is temporary in preparation for the definitive treatment with permanent fillings or permanent crowns.

This blog gives you some more information about fillings and crowns and what to do if you unexpectedly lose one. On this page, you can read about the ins and outs of fillings and crowns.

What Are Crowns And Fillings?

Filling

When a tooth has been affected by caries (tooth decay), and there is a hole, the dentist can restore it by tooth cleaning and filling it with filling material to ensure that the tooth decay does not spread further. This filling material can consist of amalgam (silver filling) or composite (white filling).

Crown, Dental Crown

When a large part of a tooth is lost or broken off, a new crown must be placed.

A crown is a metal (such as gold), porcelain, or zirconium cap that is cemented over a prepared tooth. This will give your tooth or molar its original shape back.

·         A filling serves to fill cavities in a molar or tooth

·         A dental crown is placed over a damaged tooth.

·         An implant is an artificial root that replaces the root of a missing tooth. A superstructure (abutment) is placed on the implant, and a crown (tooth) is placed on this abutment.

Almost in all cases, the failure of a filling or crown is due to certain 'accidents.' This can happen if you bite down on something very hard, causing your filling or crown to become loose and even fall out. Sports injuries can be the cause of a loose filling or crown, but this is something that does not happen very often.

If you notice that your filling or crown is loose or has fallen out, don't worry; this annoying inconvenience does not require emergency dental treatment. But this does not mean that you are not in pain because the affected tooth or tooth suddenly becomes without protection. However, if you experience pain, we advise you to make an appointment with a Virginia family dentist as soon as possible.
